![]() ![]() In the U.S., there is a new Charlotte Brontë biography by Claire Harman a Brontë-themed literary detective novel a novelistic riff on Jane Eyre whose heroine is a serial killer a collection of short stories inspired by that novel’s famous line *, “Reader, I married him” and a fan-fiction-style “autobiography” of Nelly Dean, the servant-narrator of Wuthering Heights. This year the Brontë literary-industrial complex celebrates the bicentennial of Charlotte’s birth, and British and American publishers have been especially busy. “Since 1857, when Elizabeth Gaskell published her famous Life of Charlotte Brontë, hardly a year has gone by without some form of biographical material on the Brontës appearing-from articles in newspapers to full-length lives, from images on tea towels to plays, films, and novelizations,” wrote Lucasta Miller in The Brontë Myth, her 2001 history of Brontëmania. ![]() N o body of writing has engendered more other bodies of writing than the Bible, but the Brontë corpus comes alarmingly close. ![]()

![]() ![]() "To the people whose labours go beyond ideas into the realm of 'real materials'- to the dry-land ecologists, wherever they may be, in whatever time they work, this effort at prediction is dedicated in humility and admiration." However, of course, I plodded on and could feel the gap closing in with every page much to my joy and relief. I felt a yawning chasm between Herbert's vision and my limited understanding of it. I knew there were dialogues which meant much more than their superficial meaning and was unable to grasp at it. The challenge was the complexity and depth of the plot, which left me perplexed, in the beginning. It was intriguing and challenging and heck, since I live for challenges I decided to take this one up too, gladly. The tone was umistakably sombre and I realized Herbert was not here to merely entertain me, he was here to make me part of the legend of Muad'Dib. The very first stirring I felt upon opening the yellowed pages of Dune was that of stumbling upon an English translation of an ancient Arabic manuscript of undeniable power and potence which had an epic story to narrate. ![]() All this set in a mind-boggling, frighteningly original world which Herbert ominously terms as an "effort at prediction". Machiavellian intrigue, mythology, religion, politics, imperialism, environmentalism, the nature of power. In my head, the purpose of this review is very clear. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Many of the miracles of Jesus, such as the changing of water into wine at the wedding at Cana, the transfiguration, and the calming of the storm, are not depicted, although Jesus's healing of Jairus's daughter, the blind man and the crippled woman on the Sabbath, the feeding of the multitude, and the raising of Lazarus from the dead are presented here. However, in accordance with the Gospels, the film depicts Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea as sympathetic members of the Sanhedrin. Jesus of Nazareth depicts Judas Iscariot as a well-intentioned man initially, but later as a dupe of Zerah's who betrays Jesus largely as a result of Zerah's false platitudes and pretexts. Some scenes were added in the writing of the screenplay, with some characters (such as Zerah) added to the film for brevity or dramatic effect. It stars Robert Powell as Jesus, and features an all-star ensemble cast of renowned actors, including eight who had won or would go on to win Academy Awards: Anne Bancroft, Ernest Borgnine, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Anthony Quinn, Rod Steiger, James Earl Jones and Peter Ustinov. ![]() Jesus of Nazareth ( Italian: Gesù di Nazareth) is a 1977 British-Italian epic film and television drama serial directed by Franco Zeffirelli and co-written by Zeffirelli, Anthony Burgess and Suso Cecchi d'Amico, which dramatizes the birth, life, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. ![]() ![]() She changed her tune when she saw just how good Cruise was in the role and how rich and evocative and full blooded the picture turned out to be.īut what about the sort of sequel? The misguided and comparatively impoverished Queen of the Damned? She was less enthused by the casting of hot shot Hollywood actor Tom Cruise as her beloved “Brat Prince” Lestat, the rebellious, narcissistic blonde vampire who complexities propel the narrative of the story (though that first book is most assuredly Louis’ tale, the mopey vamp played in the film by Brad Pitt). ![]() And Rice had been a fan of all of these films and greatly approved of Warner Bros.’ decision to have Jordan on board, a decision made at her suggestion. It was an ideal marriage of sensibilities, as Jordan had already proved his abilities at creating lush, erotic dark fantasy with 1984’s The Company of Wolves, as well as gritty character drama with films like 1986’s Mona Lisa and 1992’s The Crying Game. ![]() ![]() Visionary Irish director Neil Jordan’s mesmerizing 1994 adaptation of Anne Rice’s breakthrough 1976 bestseller Interview with the Vampire is rightly regarded as a Gothic horror classic and fine realization of the hyper-sensual world Rice birthed. Until one day, the characters just sort of popped into my head, and I had to start writing it. Jokingly, I told my friends I would write a book called “The DUFF.” It became an ongoing, inside joke. When I was a senior in high school, I overheard an acquaintance of mine talking about guys using the word “DUFF.” I didn’t know what it meant, so I asked, and when I learned it meant designated, ugly, fat friend, I was totally taken aback. As with most eighties splatter flicks, SEDUCTIONS contains an Old Testament sense of morality visited upon characters who behave badly, and in most cases exist only to be picked off. This being a first novel, allowances will have to be made for the overly deliberate set-up, perfunctory characterizations and simplistic splatter movie-ish narrative. This was the first novel by Ray Garton, and a book that greatly upset one of its first readers, the late Robert Bloch-who allegedly informed the young Garton that “you’re unwell.” SEDUCTIONS was certainly like nothing else being published back in 1984 in its unapologetic mix of eroticism and violence, with stunningly gruesome imagery that nowadays seems right out of the Japanese WICKED CITY anime and series of novels. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Animal Attraction Jill Shalvis 2011 (3rd print) Berkley Animal Magnetism, #2 Good 7.
